Description: The Japanese Bantam, as it’s known in most of the English-speaking world, is an ancient breed dating back to at least the 1600s and has long been admired for its beauty. Originating in south China in what we now know as Vietnam, Thailand, and Malaysia. In much of Asia the Japanese bantam is known as the Chabo and in Spanish-speaking countries is also known as the Nagasaki. This ornamental bantam breed is recognizable by its exaggerated head and comb, prominent eye, short back, and long tail which all appear even more pronounced as a result of the breed’s short leg. The Black Tailed White Japanese is the iconic color in the breed, though several other color varieties are recognized.
I am working with what I consider to be some of the finest Japanese bantam genetics in the US thanks to two top breeders who have dedicated much of their lives to this breed, and I have them in an array of colors and in quality that would be hard to find just about anywhere. I am selecting these birds for short, wide body, prominent head features, short leg, and feather quality and am offering select birds for sale.
Today I am offering pairs that correspond to the photos - you will be receiving the actual birds shown:
Pair #1: Golden Duckwing/Black Breasted Red Young Pair. Excellent tail spread on both birds. I expect this pair to produce both GDW and BBR offspring.
Pair #2: Golden Duckwing/Black Breasted Red Young Pair. I love the tail set on this young male and the pullet has been laying like crazy. I expect this pair to product both GDW & BBR offspring.
Pair #3: Golden Duckwing brood pair. I expect this pair will produce variations on Golden Duckwing (some close to Silver) as well as BBR pullets. Excellent body and tails on both.
Pair #4: Barred brood pair. This pair has produced some excellent offspring for me. Good body and tail development. Female's tail is not fully in. Male has developed some white in the sickles in his second year but was sound barred as a cockerel.
Pair #5: Gray brood pair. This pair has excellent body and tail set. They have produced some very nice offspring for me. The body on the cock is especially wide.
Pair #6: Gray young pair. This is a super fancy pair, with long tail and tail spread as well as body and head structure.
Pair #7: Splash pair. This is a 2024 hatch cock and 2025 hatch pullet. I used the cock heavily in my spring 2025 blue breeding. I have these priced as a brood pair. This is a color that is almost impossible to find and priced to move. Can add another blue or black female at $100 plus additional shipping.
As there is only one of each pair listed, once they are sold the website will show as sold out. I will continue adding to the list as I have time to take photos.
Pricing: Japanese Bantams that meet my selection criteria for adherence to breed standard start at $250 per pair for brood pairs and $350 per pair for young birds. Shipping and box for Japanese Bantam pairs runs $190 in the lower 48 states. The total cost of a brood pair with shipping is $440 and a young pair with shipping is $540.
Recognition: The ABA recognizes Japanese Bantams in the following color varieties for exhibition: Barred, Black, Black Breasted Red, Black Tailed Buff, Black Tailed Red, Black Tailed White, Blue, Blue Tailed White, Brown Red, Buff, Gray, Mottled, Self-Blue, Silver Duckwing, Silver Laced, Wheaten, White, and White Bearded. The APA recognizes Japanese Bantams in Barred, Black, Black Tailed Buff, Black Tailed White, Brown Red, Gray, Mottled, Wheaten, & White.
Shipping season: Japanese Bantams generally ship the end of October through the end of May, depending on availability. Pick up at the farm by the buyer or their trusted courier can be arranged year-round.
